Living Memorials
From OasisNYC
Because of the overwhelming outpouring of community sentiment and desire to memorialize the tragic losses that occurred on September 11, 2001 the USDA Forest Service has responded with the “Living Memorials Project.” This initiative will invoke the resonating power of trees to bring people together and create lasting, living memorials to the victims of terrorism, their families, communities, and the nation. Cost-share grants have supported the design and development of community projects in the New York City metropolitan area, SW Pennsylvania, and the Washington DC metropolitan area.

The Forest Service also has developed a preliminary assessment of community and forest impacts in and around the World Trade Center site. This PowerPoint presentation begins to explore the depth and extent of the ecological damage caused by the September 11, 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center towers.
