Minutes:
Follow up on May 25th meeting
- Steve commented on:
- closure on governance structure, how to make decisions, transparent governance, etc. is all helpful
- what do people think about laundry list put together by Wolf Keens?
- like to start sending around funding proposal, not so much foundations but other sources and how to use the website to generate funds
- Does budget makes sense? Graduate Center takes 15% - pays for space, internet, conference rooms, software, etc.
- existing costs are more or less covered but not enough time spent on outreach and coordination of committees and website updates
- should raise money for specific projects - data collection, outreach, education, etc.
- so prioritize list put together by WK
- focus on users of property data
- Derst Organization shows interest in helping raise money
Raising Money
- sponsorship on website discussion
- link to list of sponsors, logos on website
- Paula offered contact?
- Maura mentioned talking to Mark Casserta - has some experience in this, placing ads on Gotham Gazette
- Government, Bob asked about relationship too
- SR - potential source of funding, can we get an item in City Council
- contact speaker? Gail Brewer?
- is the process really commpetitive
- there are member items and general council allocations, important time is April, May, June, anyone can put in a request but then you have to do a lot of work making sure they are aware of it, now is a good time to start but might not be possible to get money until July, 2007, real work is the lobbying, Lenny will talk to someone...
- Bob? suggested City Planning and GLOBE, Steve met with same person
- Jane - people high up in city use OASIS, how do we get them to take ownership of it
- Links to OASIS - Dept. of Buildings, Sanitation, HPD, Finance
- SR - outreach to City Council have team meetings, start building support for next funding cycle
- Jane - Bronx Boro Pres. office suggested going to City Planning
- Office of Sustainability?
- Jack/Bob suggested something - Ben Miller? Someone at DEP
- Organizations who use OASIS most should be hit up for financial support, or membership fee, fee for more detailed information
- Google? National Geographic?
- Lenny - opportunity to train teachers to use OASIS but not sure how to make it happen
- Hunter?
- Libraries? Been trying to upgrade technology for years, contact education director - Jack gave name.
- Paula suggested emerging niche? Steve likes having others take lead to bring in money for other projects that also support OASIS, others have experience that can help
- Jack - trade schools? Steve mentioned work with LaGuardia Community College
- Maura question about costs - Steve spends 10%, Marty about 20%, some other projects overlap with OASIS, Steve would like to spend more time on this but needs more funding, website is there and works and we really need time spent on outreach
- Improving coordination with other projects easier at CUNY, easier to develop partnerships, some have financial implications, New Media Lab - cutting edge web technologies could help support but not sure if there is funding, Derst Organization
- Environmental Science Graduate Program - interdisciplinary, focus on GIS
- discussion about sponsorship on website, problems about size of logo, ownership of site, changes to content, who to allow and who not?, etc.
- could be a regular source of funding, should we have guidelines? cap the amount of money? do we pursue one set of funding source and not others? NOT Advertisine.
- Steve will write up guidelines
- Donate Now link?

- resource information could all be moved to wiki, easier for editting
- need to add a contact us link so people without password can send suggestions
- GC limits number of editors, not open to everyone
Next Steering Committee meeting
- Google Earth presentations? Get someone to come from Google? Highlight new links to Google Earth from OASIS maps? Living Memorials? Sponsorship discussion? Watershed project, $15,000 available - send Matt ideas? Organize committees before next steering committee meeting?
- When? Early November, after elections
- What to do with survey? Summarize results. people don't understand power of website. zoning requested a lot - opens tip of iceberg. data evolves, particularly zoning. follow up with city planning official mapping?
- social indicators report - Bob suggested incorporating. how do we get this?
To Do List
